La
campagne EBENE du N.O. L’Atalante,

EBENE
cruise of R.V. L’Atalante took
place from October 21st to November 20th 1996. Its major goal was the
study (Etude) of grazing (Broutage) in (En) the Equatorial zoNe (i.e. EBENE) in the frame of the international JGOFS (Joint Global
Ocean Flux Study) programme. Thus, the equatorial Pacific is the major
export area of carbon dioxide towards the atmosphere and it is
characterized by a low primary production compared to available
macronutrient concentrations. Grazing controls the phytoplankton biomass
and was studied by considering different sizes of organisms and their diel
variations in order to provide a better understanding of the HNLC system
functioning. |

The cruise plan included a meridional transect along 180°, made of
a series of short stations between 8°S and 8°N, and two 5-day long time series stations
at 3°S and the equator, during which time variations of phytoplankton, microheterotrophs
and mesozooplankton could be studied during 48h-long intensive sampling periods. In situ
primary production mesurements, grazing studies with the dilution technique and particle
depth profiles with a video camera were also performed during the time series stations.
Besides, four TAO instrumented lines
were recovered and moored along 180°.
